Screen Printing Graphics Types

Vector and Raster, the two main Graphic Types used for Screen Printing Purposes.

Graphic Files and Imprint Style

Vector and Raster graphics types can be formated in different ways and be saved in graphic files. To determine what graphic type and format you may need for a Screen Printing Project, it is important to consider the Graphic Style, which consist in various aspects of the expected imprinting result such as; Imprint Surface, Graphic Style, Special Effects and Silk Screen Method.

Camera Ready Artwork

If artwork is not ready for production (Camera Ready) additional Artwork adjustments may apply. Please check with your Graphic Designer before any artwork submission. If files are not created properly, we will advice before any work gets done on them. File recreation or modification changes exceeding more than 15 minutes of work are subject to fees.

Vectors are the use of geometrical primitives such as pointslinescurves, and shapes or polygon(s), which are all based on mathematical expressions, to represent images in computer graphics. Vector graphics are based on vectors (also called paths, or strokes) which lead through locations called control points. Each of these points has a definite position on the x and y axes of the work plan. Each point, as well, is a variety of database, including the location of the point in the work space and the direction of the vector (which is what defines the direction of the track). Each track can be assigned a color, a shape, a thickness and also a fill.

This does not affect the size of the files in a substantial way because all information resides in the structure; it describes how to draw the vector. -Wikipedia

In computer graphics, a raster graphics image, or bitmap, is a dot matrix data structure representing a generally rectangular grid of pixels, or points of color, viewable via a monitorpaper, or other display medium. Raster images are stored in image files with varying formats.

A bitmap corresponds bit-for-bit with an image displayed on a screen, generally in the same format used for storage in the display’s video memory, or maybe as a device-independent bitmap. A bitmap is technically characterized by the width and height of the image in pixels and by the number of bits per pixel (a color depth, which determines the number of colors it can represent).

The printing and prepress industries know raster graphics as contones (from “continuous tones“). The opposite to contones is “line work”, usually implemented as vector graphics in digital systems. -Wikipedia

Vector and Raster Basic Tips

Prepare artwork for production.

Broken Splines

Please make sure all vector paths are joint together and splines are closed. Also a well grouped and layered paths make a job easier when color separate the image.

Image Resolution DPI (Dots Per Inch)

Dots (pixels) quantity that makes an image in a defined 2D area. Higher resolution means more image detail. Art must be at the imprint size wit a 300 DPI resolution.

Color Bleed

Overlapping colors usually is done to cover the white base when imprinting on dark backgrounds.

Groups and Layers

Layers must be in order from the lightest color at the top to the darkest color at the bottom.

Vector Files

Illustrator (ai), Illustrator EPS (eps), and  Adobe PDF (pdf). Vector files must not contain have raster images.

Raster Files

Photoshop (psd), JEPG (jpg), PNG (png), Photoshop EPS (eps),Photoshop PDF (pdf) and TIFF (tif).
